What You Need to Know About Utility Locating
Locating utilities is an art as much as science. What does this mean? Most people think that the locator guy just points his device at the ground, paints a spot on the ground and right under that spot is where the utility is. Simple right? Not! There are many different things that can still cause problems and danger! Utilities buried on top of each other but not known by the locator, areas with lots of interference, or areas giving false readings. The only way to be sure is through potholing / daylighting the utility. What is that? That is when they use a vacuum and air or water to bore a hole in to the ground to see the pipes and exact depth. Locating is just the first step in a safe dig. How the excavator wants to proceed is their judgement call. They may choose to carefully hand dig the area or use machinery, however, whatever they decide it is critical to always proceed with caution when digging around utilities.
